Where It Started, Where It Ended

When Abbi Kozal arrived at Spring Lake Public Schools as a new student, she carried something many students bring with them on their first day: uncertainty.

A new school means new faces, new routines, and a lot of unanswered questions. For Abbi, those feelings were especially real as she walked into Spring Lake for the first time. Her very first hour as a Laker was spent in Mrs. Britton's classroom, and while she remembers the nerves that came with being new, she remembers something else even more clearly.

She remembers being welcomed.

Mrs. Britton took extra time to help Abbi find her footing, supporting her in math and reading while helping her gain confidence in an unfamiliar environment. More importantly, she helped Abbi feel like she belonged. What could have been an overwhelming transition became the beginning of a connection that would stay with her throughout her years at Spring Lake.

Fast forward to senior year.

As part of Spring Lake High School's Senior Host program, students have the opportunity to mentor and support younger Lakers in our elementary buildings. When it came time for Abbi to choose where she wanted to serve, the decision was easy. She returned to Mrs. Britton's classroom.

This time, however, she wasn't the student looking for reassurance. She was the mentor.

Throughout the year, Abbi worked alongside Mrs. Britton and her students, building relationships and offering the same encouragement she once received. The classroom that had welcomed her as a nervous newcomer became the place where she could give back.

Then came one final, remarkable detail.

Abbi's last hour as a Spring Lake student was spent in the exact same classroom where her first hour had begun years earlier.

To mark the occasion, Team Britton gave her a send-off she won't soon forget—a spirited tunnel of cheers, smiles, and celebration as she prepared to leave the classroom one final time. It was a joyful moment, but also a meaningful one. It captured everything that makes schools special: relationships that endure, teachers who leave lasting impressions, and students who grow into leaders because someone once believed in them.

As Abbi walked across the graduation stage, her story serves as a reminder that education is about more than lessons and assignments. It's about people.

Sometimes the places that shape us most are the ones that make us feel at home from the very beginning.
