The Bridge Reconnected: Spring Lake and Grand Haven Renew Historic Rivalry After 37 Years

For decades, the stretch of U.S. 31 connecting Spring Lake and Grand Haven has served as more than just a roadway over the Grand River—it is the physical dividing line of one of the shoreline's most passionate community rivalries. Throughout the 1980s, autumn in the Tri-Cities meant crisp Friday nights, packed bleachers, and the high-stakes football clash between the Spring Lake Lakers and the Grand Haven Buccaneers.

Then, the tradition paused.

When the final whistle blew on Friday, October 27, 1989, no one in attendance could have predicted it would be the last time the two varsity programs met on the gridiron for nearly four decades. This Thursday, August 27, that 37-year hiatus officially comes to an end as our Lakers cross the bridge to open the season against the Buccaneers in one of the most anticipated games in modern Laker history.

Memories of Grabinski Field: October 27, 1989

To understand what this Thursday night means, you have to go back to that late-October evening on Grabinski Field in 1989. The atmosphere in the halls of Spring Lake High School leading up to kickoff was electric, fueled by players who had grown up competing against each other in Tri-Cities Mariner youth football.

"It was a mix of emotions," recalls Rodney Bench, a starting running back on the 1989 squad. "The student body was excited and energetic... The locker room was tense. I had my typical pregame butterflies and felt like I had to puke. As we left the locker room and walked down the hall and on the sidewalk toward the stadium, I remember the click-clack rhythm of cleats. It was calming and exciting at the same time."

Once the ball was kicked, the physical reality of the rivalry took center stage. Bench vividly remembers a specific running play that captured the intense, personal nature of playing your neighbors.

"Our offensive line had a perfect hole, but then I got blasted by one of the Buccaneer linebackers," Bench shares. "As I laid on my back, I saw that it was one of the Grand Haven guys I knew, Matt Maloley. He smiled and said, ‘Hey, Bench!’ I pretended I wasn’t fazed as I peeled myself off the turf and replied, ‘Nice hit.’"

The Loss That Lingers—and the Lifelong Bond

For former Laker cornerback Mike Ercole, the 1989 game remains etched in his memory with painful clarity. Spring Lake struck early on their opening drive but missed the two-point conversion. Grand Haven slowly wore down the Laker defense with a powerful ground attack, also scoring before halftime, but making their extra point: 6-7. That's exactly how the score would end. Spring Lake had heartbreak on their home turf.

"I am 54 years old, and that loss still lingers with me," Ercole admits. "I never wanted to win anything that bad as I and we did that game. I spent 28 years working as a Police Officer/Firefighter with the City of Grand Haven, and in that entire time, the Buccaneers remained my biggest rival and I refused to root for the football team no matter who they played."

Yet, despite the sting of defeat, the high-stakes pressure forged an unbreakable connection among the roster.

"The boys I played with at Spring Lake will forever be my brothers," Ercole says. "Whenever I come across one of my old teammates, it's like connecting with an old friend again. We went through something special together, and that bond will last a lifetime."

Passing the Torch to the 2026 Lakers

As the current Laker squad prepares to step onto the field this Thursday, both alumni offer powerful advice for the young men wearing the red and grey.

"It’s all about the team," Bench says. "The people that have been by your side for months, even years—they have your back and you have theirs. See the crowd, feel their excitement. Take a deep breath and absorb the evening energy. Appreciation the people that support you."

Ercole, who admits he is already "cranked up" for kickoff, echoes that sentiment: "My advice to this year's team is simple: do your job, listen to your coaches, and follow the game plan. Fifty-plus years of prior Laker football members are pulling for you all. If you win, we all win."
