Smart Start Sets Lakers Up for Success
At Spring Lake High School, the first day of classes doesn’t begin with uncertainty—it begins with confidence. That’s because of Smart Start, a day-long event designed to help students prepare for the year ahead in practical, meaningful ways.
During Smart Start, students receive their class schedules, school IDs, yearbooks, and Chromebooks. They also practice locker combinations, locate their classrooms, and get comfortable navigating the building. Equally important, the day provides time to reconnect with friends and meet staff members before the first official bell rings.
It’s a simple concept, but an incredibly effective one. By the time classes officially begin, Lakers already know where to go and what to do. The event helps ease nerves, smooth out logistical challenges, and reduce the stress that can come with the unknowns of a new school year.
For staff, Smart Start is more than just a chance to distribute materials. It is an opportunity to set the tone for the year, to welcome students back into the building, and to begin building the positive relationships that form the foundation of academic success. For students, it’s a day that balances responsibility with excitement—a chance to take care of the details while also celebrating the return to a community of learning and friendship.
“Smart Start really lives up to its name,” Principal Ben Armey said. “By the time the first day comes, students are ready to focus on learning instead of logistics. That makes a big difference for everyone.”
In short, Smart Start ensures that Lakers hit the ground running. With the essentials taken care of and the building already familiar, the focus can shift to what matters most: learning, growing, and making the most of the school year ahead.
Go Lakers—and here’s to a smart beginning!
