SLHS Debuts New Hub and Media Center
Coming back from spring break usually carries a bit of a slow start, but at Spring Lake High School, the energy was immediate and visible. While students were away, the final touches were placed on two transformative areas funded by the 2023 bond: the brand-new Media Center and the dedicated student lounge, known as the Laker Hub. By the time the first bell rang on Monday morning, the "hallway floor" culture of the past was officially replaced with spaces designed to treat our students like the young professionals they are becoming.
The opening of the new Media Center is particularly timely as we celebrate School Library Month. However, this isn't the quiet, dusty library of the past. From the moment the doors opened, the space has been humming with a variety of activities that reflect the modern needs of a high schooler. It was designed for a specific kind of versatility—one corner serves as a quiet sanctuary for testing and focused reading, while another area hosts the Math Lab and collaborative class presentations. There is a front desk for book circulation and Chromebook support, ensuring that the digital tools our students rely on are always ready for the job.
What truly makes this space work, however, isn’t just the modern furniture or the open floor plan; it’s the people. A school library is only as effective as the librarians who anchor it. At Spring Lake, our librarians serve as the primary navigators of this new environment, ensuring that students aren't just surrounded by resources, but are actually learning how to use them. Whether a student is hunting for a specific title or needs help troubleshooting a research project, the Media Center has always been the academic heart of the building--now, with great new features.
Just down the hall, the new student lounge—the Laker Hub—has provided a much-needed sense of place for our Lakers. For years, it wasn't uncommon to see students huddled on hallway floors during lunch or between classes. The opening of this lounge changes that dynamic entirely. By providing a comfortable, intentional space for students to call their own, we are sending a clear message: we value your comfort and your time. Within hours of opening, the space was already "stress-tested," with students utilizing it for everything from high-intensity morning study sessions to catching up with friends over lunch.
These two projects represent more than just fresh paint and new carpet. They are a physical manifestation of our community's commitment to the student experience. When voters supported the 2023 bond, this was the goal—to create an environment that fosters both productivity and genuine connection. As we watch our students move into these spaces with such ease and pride, it’s clear that the investment is already paying off. The Laker Hub and the new Media Center aren't just rooms in a building; they are the new standard for what it means to learn and grow at Spring Lake High School.
Go Lakers!
