Powered by Purpose: Celebrating the Operations Teams Behind Every Laker School Day
As another school year takes off across Spring Lake Public Schools, much of the public focus naturally centers on innovative classrooms, dedicated teachers, and engaging student activities. Yet, behind every successful school day sits a vast network of dedicated professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes. This season, the district is pausing to celebrate the unsung heroes who keep our schools running safely, efficiently, and warmly: the SLPS Operations Department.
The journey begins long before the first bell rings with our Transportation Department, the team entrusted with carrying our most valuable commodity—our children. Navigating early morning hours, unpredictable Michigan weather, and daily routes, our bus drivers and transit staff approach every run with intense preparation and care. Through rigorous safety training and thorough daily pre-trip inspections, this crew ensures that young Lakers start and finish their school days feeling safe, supported, and welcomed.
Once students arrive on campus, the work of powering their learning shifts to the SLPS Food Services team. Academic success depends heavily on meeting basic physical needs first, and this hardworking cafeteria crew has already served thousands of nutritious meals across our district in just the opening weeks of the school year. By ensuring every student is well-nourished and energized, the food services team provides the literal fuel required for classroom focus, artistic creation, and athletic performance.
Ensuring that those learning environments remain safe, functional, and comfortable falls on the shoulders of the SLPS Maintenance Crew. Working from the inside out, this team handles an endless to-do list that ranges from complex boiler room troubleshooting and mechanical repairs to spending long hours out in the heat maintaining playgrounds and athletic fields. Their work is defined by a simple, unwavering standard: doing whatever needs doing. Whenever a facility call comes in, the maintenance staff arrives without hesitation to keep our buildings secure and fully operational.
The footprint of our Operations team extends even beyond standard school hours through the SLPS Community Childcare program. Designed to offer essential support for working households, this team provides a structured, friendly environment for students before the morning bell and after afternoon dismissal. With high demand year after year, the program simplifies daily logistics for local parents by offering seamless transportation directly to Holmes Elementary and Spring Lake Intermediate School.
A school district simply cannot launch a successful year without the daily commitment of these foundational departments. While their heavy lifting often happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt in every classroom, cafeteria, bus aisle, and playground across Spring Lake. We extend our deepest gratitude to our entire Operations team for their reliability, hard work, and unwavering dedication to our kids.
