One Lane, Two Paths: The Sibling Bond Driving Laker Swim & Dive

As the top-ranked Spring Lake Swim & Dive team prepares for the state meet this week, much of the attention is focused on the scoreboard. But behind the rankings are individual stories of discipline—and in the case of Patrick and Ben, a unique brotherly dynamic that pushes them both to excel in very different ways.

Patrick, a senior captain and WZZM Student of the Week a few weeks back, views his role through a lens of effort and service. Beyond the pool, he is the author of Letters to Grandpa, a book born from personal grief that has evolved into a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. For Patrick, leadership isn’t about a title; it’s about the "small actions"—a word of encouragement before a heat or fostering a sense of belonging during morning lifts. "If you are going to do something, do it to your best ability," he says, a mantra that applies as much to his writing as it does to his anchor leg in a relay.

Then there is Ben. A sophomore who has already garnered national attention, Ben operates with a quiet, intense focus. As he’s clearing 16'3” on the national club circuit for pole vaulters, he stays grounded by ignoring the rankings and focusing strictly on his own growth. His philosophy is blunt and effective: "Push yourself until you physically can’t."

In the pool, while one swims and the other dives, their worlds occasionally collide. One of the season's highlights was a rare moment on Senior Night when the brothers competed together on the 200-freestyle relay. It’s a memory they’ll carry long after the state meet concludes.

They are each other’s biggest fans and toughest critics. They aren't afraid to call each other out when they know the other can do better, but at the end of the day, the rivalry stays in the water. Once the meet is over, the intensity fades back into a simple, grounding brotherhood—usually settled over a game of ping pong.

As they head to States, Patrick and Ben represent the best of the Laker spirit: one step at a time, one dive at a time, and always for each other.
