Holmes Elementary Earns Regional Literacy Honors

Holmes Elementary Earns Regional Literacy Honors

If you walked into Holmes Elementary last week, the atmosphere was unmistakably electric. Amidst a sea of Laker red and gray, students and staff gathered for a celebration that was years in the making. While the "big check" and the school-wide cookie delivery were certainly highlights, the true reason for the excitement was something much deeper: Holmes Elementary has been named one of only six schools in Michigan for the TalentFirst 2026 Literacy Leadership Recognition Program.

This isn’t a typical "participation trophy." To understand why this recognition matters, you have to look past the ceremony and into the data. TalentFirst, a regional organization focused on economic and educational growth, doesn't hand these awards out based on anecdotes. They look for schools that are fundamentally moving the needle in literacy through research-based instruction and proven student growth.

The Power of Proven Growth

The selection process involves a rigorous look at M-STEP scores, but with a specific lens: TalentFirst identifies schools that are significantly outperforming their peers with similar economic profiles. In other words, this award recognizes that the growth happening at Holmes isn't accidental—it is the result of intentional, high-quality instruction that works for every student, regardless of their starting point.

When we talk about "peeling back the curtain" on education, this is what it looks like. It’s the hours teachers spend analyzing individual student data, the commitment to the "Science of Reading," and the shift toward instructional methods that are proven by cognitive science to help children decode and comprehend language more effectively.

A Celebration of the "How"

During the award ceremony, leadership from TalentFirst joined Holmes students and staff to celebrate these "literacy leaders." While the students enjoyed their treats, the educators in the room understood the weight of the moment. This award honors the way we teach. It validates the hard work our staff puts in every single day to ensure that literacy isn't just a subject, but a foundation for every child’s future.

"This is the perfect way to celebrate Reading Month," noted principal Sandra Smits. "It’s a testament to the fact that when we align our teaching practices with proven research, our students don't just meet standards—they exceed them."

Looking Ahead

As Holmes Elementary displays this new recognition, the focus remains on the students. Literacy is the gatekeeper to all other learning, and by securing this foundation, Holmes is ensuring its Lakers are prepared for whatever comes next.

Congratulations to the students who showed up and did the work, the families who supported them at home, and the teachers who continue to lead with excellence. The cookies were a sweet touch, but the real reward is the bright future being built, one chapter at a time, in every Holmes classroom.

Go Lakers!
