Holmes 1st Graders Use Real-World Exploration to Strengthen Opinion Writing
At Holmes Elementary, first graders are learning the art of opinion writing in a way that’s both engaging and authentic—by stepping outside the classroom and into the heart of our community.
As part of their writing unit, students took a walking field trip to explore the vibrant shops along Grand Haven’s Washington Street. Along the way, they met local business owners, asked thoughtful questions, and observed what made each store special. With clipboards in hand and curiosity in full swing, students gathered details and insights to help them form and support their own opinions.
Now, back in the classroom, they’re turning those experiences into written opinion pieces about their favorite shops and businesses. The best part? Their writing has been proudly displayed in the very stores they visited—giving them a real audience for their work and reinforcing the importance of clear, persuasive writing.
This meaningful blend of literacy and community connection is made possible by the creativity of our educators, the support of family chaperones, and the warm welcome from our local business community. It’s a powerful example of how real-world learning can bring lessons to life—and help students see themselves as writers with something valuable to say.
This type of collaboration makes learning memorable.
