Full Circle: SLHS Graduate Helps Build New Media Center & Commons

Not long ago, Hunter Malaski was walking these same hallways as a Spring Lake High School student. Now, he’s back—hard hat on, blueprints in hand—helping create the very spaces where future Lakers will learn, collaborate, and make memories.

As an Assistant Superintendent Intern with OAK, Malaski plays a key role in the construction of SLHS’s new construction. His responsibilities range from monitoring daily operations and maintaining safety standards to coordinating with architects and subcontractors.

“It’s rewarding to contribute to the school that gave me such a great high school experience,” Malaski said. “I’m proud to be part of it, and I hope the work we’re doing makes the current and future SLPS students’ experiences as good as mine was.”

The work is deeply personal. He recalls the old library where he and his classmates spent hours—soon to be replaced by a modern space designed for collaboration and connection. “It was strange to see it demolished,” he admitted, “but I know the new spaces will be even better.”

This internship has only strengthened his passion for construction. “Working with different people every day and facing each problem like a challenge—that’s what excites me about this industry,” Malaski said.

And if Malaski could send a message to current students walking past the construction site each day? “Understand and appreciate that your community is investing in your schools and your future. These new spaces are for you.”

From SLHS student to builder of SLHS’s future—it’s a full-circle moment worth celebrating.
