Building Community Through PBIS at Spring Lake Public Schools
At Spring Lake Public Schools, fostering a positive and inclusive school culture is a top priority. One of the ways we achieve this is through the Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS), which acknowledges and rewards students for being excellent role models to their peers. PBIS not only promotes good behavior but also strengthens the sense of community across our schools.
PBIS works by encouraging students to make positive choices and demonstrate values that contribute to a supportive and respectful environment. As part of this program, students are recognized for their outstanding behavior and contributions to the school community. These acknowledgements are tracked, and when the entire school reaches a predetermined milestone, students earn a well-deserved reward.
These rewards go beyond tangible prizes—they provide opportunities for students and staff to connect through fun, engaging activities. Recently, students earned time to play and interact with staff in a variety of ways. Whether through games, creative projects, or simply enjoying time together, these moments foster deeper relationships and build a beautiful sense of community within each building.
“PBIS is about more than just rewarding good behavior,” said curriculum director, Kate Drake. “It’s about creating a culture where students feel seen, valued, and part of something bigger. The sense of unity and pride it fosters is truly remarkable.”
This approach also helps students develop important life skills, including teamwork, empathy, and self-discipline. By celebrating their achievements together, students see firsthand how individual actions contribute to collective success.
The results of PBIS at Spring Lake are evident in the smiles, laughter, and camaraderie shared during these special moments. It’s about cultivating an environment where every student feels empowered to thrive and contribute to their school’s success.
As our Lakers continue to lead by example, Spring Lake Public Schools is proud to see the meaningful connections and vibrant community PBIS helps to create.
