Bringing Agriculture to the Classroom: Fifth Graders Explore Science with Soybeans

Spring Lake’s fifth graders recently dove into a hands-on science experience thanks to the Ottawa County Farm Bureau’s Agriculture in the Classroom program. This engaging lesson gave students the opportunity to explore the collaborative work of agricultural scientists and engineers while discovering innovative ways to use renewable resources—specifically, soybeans!

The lesson introduced students to bio-based products, careers in science and engineering, and the importance of sustainability. One of the highlights was a simple yet exciting soybean plastic lab, where students mixed soybean oil, water, and cornstarch, then microwaved the mixture to create a biodegradable plastic. This hands-on experiment allowed students to see real-world applications of science while discussing how agricultural advancements impact everyday life.

The return of Agriculture in the Classroom to Spring Lake was met with enthusiasm. "I used to have them visit every year, but over time, we got away from it," shared Mrs. O'Donnell. "When they reached out, I jumped at the chance to restart the relationship. This lesson fits perfectly with our three fifth-grade science units—Earth, Physical, and Life Sciences."

This partnership not only enriches science education but also helps students better connect with their world in meaningful ways. Hands-on learning, real-world applications, and scientific discovery—what could be better?
