Alumni Update: Kyle Garrison (‘20) Finds His Voice in Michigan Media

Kyle Garrison, a 2020 graduate of Spring Lake High School, has launched his career in broadcast journalism with 9 & 10 News in Traverse City, Michigan. As a News Multimedia Journalist and Anchor, Kyle wears many hats—shooting video, conducting interviews, editing, producing stories, and occasionally anchoring on air.

“Each day I produce a VOSOT, package, and online article covering news around Grand Traverse County,” Kyle explained. “I love being able to connect with the local community and dive into new stories every day. Highlighting local businesses and events has been a great way to build relationships while informing the public.”

Landing the role brought both relief and excitement. “I had been looking for jobs in media for about two months with little traction,” he said. “Being able to secure a job in my home state, doing what I’m most passionate about, felt like a big weight off my shoulders.”

Kyle credits his foundation in writing to his Spring Lake teachers, especially Mr. Theune, Mrs. Crawford, and Mr. Sineath. “The constructive criticism at the time wasn’t always fully appreciated,” he admitted, “but it was necessary to becoming a strong journalist.”

For current Lakers considering careers in media, Kyle’s advice is straightforward: “Go pursue it as soon as you can. Learning in the classroom helps with the technical side, but real-world reporting and talking in front of live audiences is how you get reps and find your niche.”

Outside of the newsroom, Kyle finds balance through weightlifting and sports podcasting. He currently hosts a daily Detroit Pistons show, a creative outlet that sharpens his on-air presence while keeping him connected to sports.

Looking ahead, Kyle hopes to one day serve as a sports anchor or reporter in a top 50 market such as Detroit or Chicago. Play-by-play commentary is also on his radar. “Having the opportunity to produce, edit, operate cameras, and be on air opens up a ton of possibilities much earlier in my career than I expected,” he said.

No matter where journalism takes him, Kyle says being a Laker is central to his identity: “Spring Lake will always be home, and the community will always welcome you back with open arms.”
