A Joyful First Day of School

A Joyful First Day of School

The first day of school is always special. The hallways buzz with excitement, classrooms fill with laughter and curiosity, and staff welcome students with the kind of energy that sets the tone for the entire year.

Spring Lake Public Schools’ Director of Communications, David Theune, had the opportunity to experience that excitement firsthand, traveling to each school to catch the excitement. “It’s pure joy to see staff interact with students,” Theune said. “All ages, all grades—the energy is high and the hope for a great year is even higher.”

That sense of joy is matched by professionalism. Teachers and staff have spent countless hours preparing classrooms, organizing resources, and building lesson plans that meet students where they are. Those preparations pay off on day one, when every detail contributes to a strong first impression.

“The professionalism of staff shines through as classrooms are designed for student support,” Theune noted. “There is so much that goes into that first impression—and then to see it go well is just art in motion.”

Indeed, the first day is about more than schedules, supplies, and routines. It is about relationships. It is about the small but powerful moments when students feel known, supported, and ready to learn.

At Spring Lake Public Schools, those moments add up quickly. From a kind word in the hallway to a carefully prepared classroom activity, each interaction is a reminder that staff are committed not only to academic excellence but also to creating a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all students.

The first day of school may only last a few hours, but the joy, hope, and professionalism that shine through on that day serve as the foundation for everything that follows. It is, as Theune described, truly “art in motion.”
