The purpose of this message is to share with you the learning options that Spring Lake Public Schools is offering for the upcoming school year and to provide you with directions, including a timeline, for you to make a selection for your child or children for the 2020-21 school year.
Option #1: In-Person Learning
This option provides students and parents with a largely familiar experience – full-time enrollment with Spring Lake teachers, in our school buildings, face-to-face. In order to provide in-person learning this fall, SLPS committed to implementing all required aspects of the Governor’s Return to School Roadmap and furthermore is implementing all strongly recommended items to the fullest extent possible. If schools should be required to shift to Remote Learning, students can expect daily, on-line instruction during their normally scheduled school day as well as curriculum and pacing that closely resembles face-to-face instruction.
Option #2: Distance Learning
With this option, students and parents are choosing to have learning delivered 100% on-line. For students in grades DK-5, Spring Lake will provide a curriculum aligned to Michigan content standards and taught by one of our own Laker teachers or a teacher from a neighboring district. Students who are enrolled in this option should expect to engage with their teachers during normal school hours on a daily basis and to progress at a pace very similar to their peers who are learning face-to-face. For grades 6-12, Spring Lake is working with Michigan Virtual High School to offer core and elective curriculum that is aligned to Michigan content standards and taught by a certified Michigan teacher. The schedule for students in grades 6-12 may include work both during the normal school day and during evening hours. All students who are enrolled in Option #2 will be required to complete 18 weeks (1/2 the school year) before they may transition back to in-person learning.
For both options, devices will be provided to all DK-12 students. Also with both options, students can rely on Spring Lake Public Schools for food service, social-emotional wellness, and special education services.
Details about these options are included in the Return to Learning Plan on our website. This plan, developed by a team of Laker teachers and administrators, emphasizes safety, educational quality, and parental choice. Please take the time to look the plan over and to email any questions you may have to Curriculum Director Scott Ely or myself.
