SLIS traffic changes
The academic success of your student is very important to each member of our school system. The safety of your children before, during, and after school is equally important to each member of our school district.
Every policy and procedure is created with the well being of every child in mind.
The purpose of this information is to relay to you that we have a serious issue before and after school regarding the dropping off and picking up of students as they arrive and leave from school. We have had too many “close calls” as students are crossing roads, and leaving from and going to vehicles. Also, buses are being delayed or held up because they cannot maneuver around cars that are parked while dropping off or picking up students in areas that are not designated for that purpose. It is with this mind that new traffic polices are going into place effective November 29th, 2010.

Buses
Students who ride the buses numbered 17, 22, 27, 33, 32, 23, 30, & 29 have always been dropped off in the morning behind our school, and loaded buses to go home behind Holmes Elementary. The only change for students riding these buses is that drop off and pick up will both now occur behind Holmes. Students will be crossed in both the morning and afternoon by a crossing guard at the corner of Hammond and South St.
Students who ride buses numbered 31, 34, 25, 18, 14, 37, 16, and 28 have always been dropped off and picked up in the area behind the building. These students will now be dropped off and picked up in the front of the building on Hammond St., with the doors of the bus opening on the Intermediate School side of Hammond. These buses will line up in the turnaround by the Middle School arches and extend down Hammond to South St.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Dropping off and picking up students should now occur in one spot: the WEST side of the building between the building itself and the soccer field. This should occur ONLY by entering this drive from the SOUTH of the building and continuing with traffic going NORTH.
• Please do not enter from Prospect or South St. heading south. This road will now be ONE WAY.
• If you feel the need to arrive early and remain parked, please do so in the south parking lot between the building and the football field. Parking and trying to maneuver in the new drop off/pick up area will create a traffic nightmare. Please follow this procedure if you need to come into the school building as well.
• As you leave this new area, please do not turn right onto South St. You will encounter 16 buses and heavy student traffic. This will be counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish.
• Please do not park on Hammond (by the softball and baseball fields), in the back of Holmes, or in the staff parking lot expecting students to cross Hammond to come to your vehicle. Again, this forces students to cross traffic traveling in two different directions.
• Please consider “hugging” the right side of this travel way to allow vehicles who have already picked up their children to pass on the left and leave the area.
• PARENTS OF BOTH INTERMEDIATE AND HOLMES STUDENTS: If you pick of each up these students at their respective schools, please consider picking up your Holmes student first. This will allow for traffic in the new pick up area to dissipate prior to your arrival.
School personnel will be present during the first week of these changes. We ask that you please listen to their direction if it is given in order for us all to learn the new procedures and keep our students safe.
Again, it is with the safety of your children in mind that our school is making these changes. With your cooperation and understanding we can eliminate this problem and make the arrival and departure for all children safe.
