Spotlight on the Board…

Dina Horne, President

Gratitude: my overwhelming emotion as I look back on my six years of service on the Spring Lake Public School Board.

Little did I realize how much I would grow as a leader when I first met with Larry Mason to talk about the possibility of joining the board. This experience was more challenging than I expected. Decisions impacting this community were not taken lightly. My most difficult public acts have been completed on this board.

My fellow board members are a diverse group. The structure of a group of volunteers coming from a variety of professions and backgrounds to give oversight to a community’s school is preposterous and brilliant. Each one of us brings a unique perspective. I am proud to serve with these community members who have given their time to benefit our students.

Most of all I am grateful for Dennis Furton. This man is a great leader. When I became the board’s president two year ago I asked him what he wanted from me. He simply said "honesty."  And I have given that to him, at times with great hesitation, knowing that he wouldn’t always like what I had to say. I have never seen Mr. Furton posturing from a position of power. He listens, he deliberates, he leads.

Thank you, Spring Lake Public Schools, for the honor of serving on the School Board.
